Environment Artist

Modelling Artist

After reading those two job profiles description, I noticed the tasks and requirements are very similar.
Modelling artist focuses on objects such as animals, characters and still objects on a computer in 3D.
Environment artist creates computer-generated places such as streets, cities in which actors move. The artist has to create an environment which is too difficult to film in real life. Both modelling and environment artist are using similar 3D software, e.g. Maya, Blender, ZBrush to model characters or create the environment. Also, environment artist can improve their final projects in Adobe After Effects, Illustrator or Photoshop. Both roles are closely working with concept artists, texture artist and animators.
Although there are two separate job roles, the skill I gained during the course would allow me to apply to both. At this point, I can not decide which one I would prefer more.

Cover Letter

This is an example of a cover letter I would use while applying for the Environment Artist position. I reviewed a couple of different jobs offer and wrote the letter based on what those offers have in common. I did notice I don't fulfil all the requirements in any job as all of them require experience in the field. Those are the two job offers I used to write my cover letter.

RE: Environment Artist Job Application

Dear Mr Stephens,

I am applying for the Environment Artist position now available with Moving Picture Company, and I hope to become the newest member of your team. My name is Julia, and I am nearing the end of my final semester at the University of West London studying BA (Hons) in Visual Effects. During my time at UWL, I have worked on various projects and continuously develop my skills in 3D Modelling. I believe that my academic strengths and passion for creative solutions will be a positive addition to your team and the organisation’s goals.

Through the course, I have learnt and developed a lot of different skills: Modelling, texturing, rigging, animating, compositing, creating fx, etc. I have the creativity and skills needed to create unique background designs for the environments that you create that will stand out. I also know software: Maya, Zbrush, Substance Painter, Nuke, Photoshop, Adobe After Effects, Premiere Pro and more.

I can do extensive research to help create designs that are realistic and suited for the era or environment. I also have an excellent imagination for designs that are futuristic or purely fictional.

I have the ability to remain calm and productive, even when working long hours and in a stressful environment to meet tight deadlines. I have an easygoing personality and work well in groups, but I am also self-motivated and can accomplish my goals when working alone.

Yours sincerely,

Julia

Bio

Julia is mainly focused on 3D environments, 3D modelling and texturing. Consistently implements strong attention to detail and dedication to succeed while developing elements, components and effects for various projects. Her Major Project represents two different environments: Beach and London Underground Station. The main character in this story is a Penguin on his way to work, waiting for the train in Underground. Hardworking Penguin mind is at the Beach; the last scene of this short story is a lonely suitcase on the train platform. This relatively simple story tries to explain how the current situation (Covid-19)  impacts our mental well-being.
Julia modelled and textured the Penguin using Maya and Substance Painter. Unreal Engine and Maya are the leading software for the environments.

Photoshop work

I used one image as the main background and crop the building from another image to create a more complicated scene in the background.

I used the actors from "Peaky Blinders" to place them in the middle of the scene. I also used levels and brightness in Photoshop to make it look sharper. For the final image, I added fog to make it more dramatic and a "movie look like" shot.
